I’ve had the pleasure to evaluate Université Paris V — René Descartes with the CNE and the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) with EUA so far. I will also be going to Molde University College with NOKUT, and maybe I will get a chance to see a german university also.

Both the EUA and the CNE evaluations were quite peculiar. On the one hand, these two agencies don’t regularily include students in their review teams, so I had to find my place in those teams. Luckily, this was made very easy by the other team members in the respective teams. It was more difficult to define my role towards the representatives of the universities under review; in France in particular where most of the meetings were just me from the team meeting one, two or more people from the university.

Heute abend fliege ich mit Germanwings nach Hamburg, und morgen früh geht’s mit dem ICE weiter nach Berlin. Dort trifft sich, in der Landesvertretung des Landes Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, der Universitätsrat der Universität Greifswald.

Angesichts der hochschulpolitischen Situation wird’s sicher interessant. Aber was genau die Rolle des Universitätsrats ist, ist mir leider immer noch nicht ganz klar. Vielleicht das, was wie daraus machen?

Aujourd’hui, l’université de la Bourgogne m’a confirmé la bonne réception de mon dossier, et me promet «prochainement» un courrier ou courriel.

The European network for student newspapers, SPINE - Student press in Europe, has launched a new web site. Actually, it’s sort of a blog where the member papers post the main stories from their respective papers.

Very cool. And this is even more cool: there’s an RSS feed for the stories. Now if they’d put some more effort into the members’ page (profiles of the members, and why not RSS aggregation) and more of the members would supply their headlines, that’d be wonderful!

Il semble que l’UNEF l’a emporté.

Sydsvenskan Snällposten har en interessant artikelserie de kallar för kunskapsglappet, där de skriver om den påstådda nivåsänkningen i högskolan och urholkningen av resurserna. Mången gamla sanningar, men också en del nya synpunkter.

Och på något sätt kan jag aldrig undgå att fråga mig själv hur mina egna kunskaper egentligen ligger an…

Ein paar Kommentare nach 2 Minuten:

• Die Suche funktioniert noch nicht ganz. Weder eine Suche nach meinem Nachnamen noch nach dem Wort “Universitätsrat” führt direkt auf die richtige Seite
• Das Siegel ist stark vereinfacht worden. Es sieht so aus, als ob meine Ideen dazu nicht berücksichtigt wurden
• Es wäre natürlich toll, wenn’s die aktuellen Mitteilungen per RSS gäbe.

Die Suche funktioniert eigentlich doch, nur konnte ich auf dem Bildschirm meines Laptops die Ergebnisse nicht sehen — die sind so weit unten daß sie unsichtbar sind, und oben sind nur unwichtige Informationen.

On her blog, EU Commissioner Margot Wallström writes: “One thing is clear: if there is one issue representing a total communication failure it is the “services directive“! Looking back: the consultation process was inadequate since there is still room for so many different interpretations of the content. The timing was crucial: it was adopted by the previous Commission just before it left office and it was left ‘out in the air’ for everybody to criticise and nobody to explain and advocate the proposed reform. Today there is a total confusion in the debate about different concepts like ‘country of origin’ or ‘posting of workers’. We in the Barroso commission have a difficult task with this particular directive…”

I just have to say: I think that the idea of a Plan D (for Democracy) sounds nice, but a Plan C (for Communication) might be more needed. Or maybe a Plan A (for “Answer the freakin’ question!):

In autumn 2004, I (in the position of the chairperson of ESIB, representing 10 million students) asked the Commssion (DG EAC) a direct question:
How will the ’services directive’ or ‘Bolkestein directive’ affect higher education, and what steps will the Commission undertake that any such effect will not be negative?

I/we are still waiting for an answer…

Om jag minns rätt slogs det larm om detta redan för flera år sedan. Ytterligare ett bevis på att DN:s/svensk medias bevakning av högre utbildning kanske kan förbättras?
