After the ham-to-spam ration in my comments reached 100:1 I decided something needed to be done. I didn’t want CAPTCHA, so I installed Bad Behaviour and a new http:BL plugin, and things got much better!
(The 100 spam per real comment never really showed, of course: Akismet caught them. But they were still creating unnecessary load.)
Uh. It seems MySQL has botched the main data file for one of my pet projects, the Bologna Process web site.
There wasn’t much there anyway, but it’s still sad. I need to find an automatic backup option, I guess. And I didn’t really like TextPattern anyway. I think I’d rather go to using WordPress as a CMS, and hack a call to the built-in backup into every write or edit.
I was just fiddling a bit more with my MoreSimpleTags WordPress plugin that supports several services (Technorati and Knuff, in my case). I noted in one of my previous posts that the letter ä wasn’t coming out right.
It turns out Technorati and Knuff expect non 7-bit characters encoded differently: Knuff wants them in ISO-8859-1 URI encoding like this vinbär [http://bloggar.se/om/vinb%E4r] while Technorati prefers them URI encoded UTF8, like vinbär [http://technorati.com/tag/vinb%C3%A4r].
D'oh.

Seems I was a bit hasty or not paying attention. Both work with UTF-8. So the code is now urlencode(utf8_encode(html_entity_decode(trim($tag)))).

Ok, I snug a utf8_decode in there for good measure too. Turns out part of the problem is that Knuff won’t eat accented characters (which is a bit weird because they are quite common in last names in Sweden).
I pulled myself together and fixed up another plugin I have been working on: a Plugin to Clean Up Scandinavian Umlauts. It’s based on the o42 plugin that comes with the German WordPress distribution.
I have updated and modified the SimpleTags WordPress plugin to support several tagging styles. I will post the updated plugin in a few seconds.
This is also a sample post to check whether Technorati and Bloggar.se tags work.

The file upload via XMLRPC doesn’t work in WordPress 2.0. But the fix is already out there: the fixes to tickets 3376 and 3378 fixed the problem for MarsEdit and me.
Note that the uploads will be put into a year/month folder structure.
On New Year’s Eve, WordPress v. 2.0 was released. I installed/updated this morning. Thanks to the excellent update instructions, this was completely free from pain.
Not much changed on the surface, but quite a lot below said surface. For instance, parts of the Polyglot plugin seems to have quit working.
I just hope that the folks at WordPress will work a bit more on documentation than they did for version 1.5.
I tried the multilingual plugin today, but it didn’t work out too well. First, I would have to manually convert the language of all existing posts, and then the plugin ate the post titles in the RSS feed. Also, I wonder if I would still have been able to edit posts in MarsEdit.
I might give the other contestant, polyglot, a whirl also.
Update
It seems polyglot is more of what I was looking for. I want the main interface in English at all times, and just the ability to make (parts of) posts in other languages. And I will let this be decided by the readers browser preferences. If you prefer German over English, the fist sentence in the Hamburg post should appear in German.
Following the bug I’ve complained about here, I’ve hacked function mw_editPost() in xmlrpc.php: I’ve removed 'post_category' from the line that begins with $newpost = compact(). (See the link to the bug report to see why this works.)
