More iBook frustrations
Let me start off by saying that my 14″ G4 iBook is fantastic. I was considering both a 12″ iBook and a 15″ PowerBook at the time, but I think I made the right choice in terms of price/performance. I’ve also bought a iCurve and an external USB keyboard and mouse as well as an external Bluetooth dongle, and I upp’ed the memory to 768 from the beginning.
However, I feel I am reaching the limits of my har disk, and one flaw of the Mac OS is that it’s not very good at using several disks (technically, this is not a Mac OS problem but rather a problem with the applications that came with it: Mail, iPhoto and iTunes in particular).
So, I’m thinking about a hard disk upgrade. It seems to be complicated, but feasible. I’m thinking about the 120-gig Seagate Momentus.
But the question is: If I do this, should I get an internal Bluetooth module too? And maybe go all the way on memory at the same time? And if I did that, wouldn’t I be better off waiting for the soon-to-come Mac Book (sans Pro)?

Hello Johan,
this “old” line of iBooks is reliable, what about the “teething problems” that may come with the new Mac Book “junior”? Why not upgrading your system? One word of advise: Changing the hard disk of an iBook really is a 9 1/2 (difficulty level). If you pay a technician you may as well add the Bluetoooth module (if possible). You know what they say about Tiger and memory? The more the better!

Mac Book Junior — I like that name. Have you spoken to Apple about it?

It is one of a few versions http://www.cordney.com came up when talking about it few days ago, still it is more likely to just drop any addition and call it MacBook.

I think I can manage the hard disk exchange myself… but I still need to purchase the Bluetooth module, which Apple doesn’t sell. It seems some guys in France will sell it. And maybe I need a new battery too?

At least waiting for a few days paid off. Seagate is releasing a 160-gig Momentus but it’s not even on Seagate’s own web site yet.
