dotMac syncing
My dad got a new 21-inch iMac (a very cool machine, and you just have to love Photo Booth–plus I spent almost an hour watching movie trailers with Front Row).
This also gave me a chance to try out syncing with .Mac (or dotMac). And I wasn’t thrilled (though it was better than nothing, and it didn’t break stuff beyond repair).
Here’s a quick review of various app’s behaviour with .Mac syncing.
iCal
iCal syncing works okay, but gets confused with calendars that are in groups on one Mac and at the root on the other Mac (like the Home calendar is, by default)
Mail
Worked great; luckily I was clever enough to decide to sync accounts but not filters and mailboxes (which would have ruined my I-keep-every-message philosophy). Shame that automatic filtering is only applied to new messages, so reading them from webmail or another Mac means I have to manually filter them).
Safari
Works OK, but the it would be great if one could sync preferences also and not just bookmarks.
NetNewsWire
Works so-so, and should also sync preferences (and read/unread status?).
MarsEdit
No .Mac support at all, which is a shame.
Address Book
No complaints
